What It Takes to Be a Breaker Girl
Being a Breaker Girl involves much more than being a great dancer.
We are looking for passionate performers, positive role models and proud ambassadors of the BNZ Breakers.
The Breaker Girls perform at BNZ Breakers home games throughout the season and represent the club at selected community events, promotional appearances and activations.
To make the team, you need to bring more than talent.
You need performance quality, professionalism, confidence, commitment and pride in being part of one of New Zealand’s premier sporting organisations.
The Qualities We Look For
We are looking for trained dancers with strong technical ability and performance quality.
Dancers should be able to learn and retain choreography quickly, adapt to different styles, and perform confidently in a high-energy arena environment.
We are looking for experience in:

Performance Presence
A Breaker Girl needs to own the floor.
We are looking for performers who can bring energy, confidence and presence every time they step out in front of the crowd.

Professionalism
The Breaker Girls are part of a professional sporting environment.
Team members are expected to be reliable, punctual, prepared and committed throughout the season.

Great with Children and Families
The Breaker Girls play an important role in the fan experience.
They interact with children, families, members and supporters at games and community events.

Breaker Girls represent the BNZ Breakers on and off the court.
This includes how they perform, communicate, engage with fans, conduct themselves online and present themselves in public.
We are looking for people who carry themselves with pride, respect and professionalism.
Season Commitment
Successful dancers will be part of the Breaker Girls for the BNZ Breakers 2026/27 season.
This includes:
- BNZ Breakers home games
- Weekly rehearsals
- Game-day court rehearsals
- Selected community events
- Promotional appearances
- Club activations
- Content and media opportunities
For the 2026/27 season, this includes 14 home games at Spark Arena. Two regional games may also be required.
Dancers are expected to be available for all games, rehearsals and approved appearances across the season.
A small reserve team may be selected to provide cover for emergency sickness or unforeseen circumstances.
Rehearsals
The Breaker Girls rehearse weekly on Wednesdays from 12:30pm to 2:30pm.
Dancers are also required to attend a court rehearsal on game day, usually held approximately three hours before tip-off.
Attendance is extremely important. Successful dancers are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and arrive prepared.
What to Expect at Auditions
Auditions are designed to assess performance ability, technique, stage presence, confidence, professionalism and team fit.
Choreography will be taught on the day, so you do not need to prepare a routine.
There will be no cuts on the day. All dancers will be notified of their audition outcome by email after the audition process has concluded.
Applicants are expected to attend both audition dates. If you are unavailable for one audition date, please complete the registration form and

What to Wear
Please wear appropriate dance attire and footwear suitable for learning and performing choreography.
Dancers should arrive looking polished, professional and ready to perform.
Payment and Uniform
Breaker Girls are engaged as contractors to the BNZ Breakers and receive payment for games and approved appearances.
All team costumes are provided.
Dancers are required to supply their own:
- Hair and makeup products
- Skin-coloured fishnet tights
- White sneakers

Is there a minimum age requirement?
Yes. Audition applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
Do I need previous professional dance team experience?
No. Previous professional dance team experience is not required. However, applicants must be trained dancers with strong technique, performance quality and the ability to learn choreography quickly.
What styles of dance do I need experience in?
We are looking for strong, versatile performers with training and experience in commercial dance, hip hop, jazz, cheer-style performance, acro and pom.
Performance quality, confidence and work ethic are just as important as technical ability.
Do I need to live in Auckland?
Yes. Dancers must be Auckland-based and available to attend weekly rehearsals, game days and selected events throughout the season.
How many games are there?
The Breaker Girls perform at BNZ Breakers home games throughout the season. For the 2026/27 season, this includes 14 home games at Spark Arena. Two regional games may also be required.
